Doherty voted hero of the year

Arctic Monkeys were the big winners for the third year running at last nights NME awards held at the O2 arena. The northern monkeys won the Best British band at the public-voted awards, alongside The Killers who were named Best International band. Other winners included Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds festival for Best Live Event, Kate Nash for Best solo artist, Noel Fielding for Sexiest man (with The Mighty Bosh winning Best TV show), and Pete Doherty bizarrely being named Hero of the Year. Winning-losers at the awards included The Hoosiers for Worst Band, Britney Spears: Blackout for Worst Album and despite rumours this week of her starting up her own fashion line, Amy Winehouse picked up the Worst Dressed gong.

Inside gossip from the event involved pikey Kelly Osbourne getting caught trying to sneak in a bottle of vodka under her coat, Alexa Chung who spent the night being repeatedly sick due to a mystery illness, and all the celebs enjoying cream teas (albeit alcohol-free as the bar closed during the award presentations) served up as the Klaxtons opened the event.

Harry The Secret Hero

A news blackout silencing the British media has finally come to an end as foreign media broke the story that Prine Harry is currently fighting with front line troops in Afghanistan, and has been since before Christmas. The 24 year old Prince who has always wanted to be a soldier has finally been given the opportunity to prove himself out in the field with his regiment. Stationed in Helmand, a province of Afghanistan, he is treated like a ‘normal’ soldier and is reported to have commented “this is about as normal as I’m going to get.”

The media secrecy surrounding the deportment was born of the failure, last May, to send the third-in-line to the throne to Iraq. There was extensive coverage devoted to the rights and wrongs of such a move and, at the eleventh hour, in the glare of publicity, Harry didn't go because the threats were too real and the risks for him and his men were too great. The media's self-imposed silence hasn't been a completely selfless act. In return for not rushing into print or onto the airwaves, they have been rewarded with access to Harry at regular intervals.

Today army chiefs are deciding whether or not to pull Prine Harry out of Afghanistan.

Protestors Climb Parliament

Campaigners climbed on the roof of Parliament yesterday and unfurled banners protesting about the proposed expansion of Heathrow. It is thought the group gained access using visitors' passes, and made their way to the roof via a fire escape. Mr Brown told MPs decisions had to be made "in the chamber of this House and not on the roof of this House".
Protesters from the Plane Stupid group climbed onto the roof at about 9.30am, unfurled banners and threw down paper planes, which they said were made from documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. The five protesters were led off peacefully and then searched by officers at about 12.20pm. They were arrested for trespass and questioned by police.
One of them, Richard George, said: "We decided to let Gordon Brown get on with prime minister's questions, but we just wanted him to know what it is like to have an inconvenience above your head that you did not ask for."

Cocaine galore! £7m of Colombia’s finest washes up on Cornish beaches.
A Cornish beach-comber discovered slightly more than weather-beaten wood and pieces of broken lobster-pot when he was walking on Pentreath Beach on the Lizard Pennisula – a package of cocaine with a street value of £1million.

Such events have become almost routine in Cornwall. Within the last three weeks five similar hauls – more than £6m worth – have been discovered on the county’s beaches. The origin does not take much detective work; some of the packages are marked “Columbia” in faded writing.

Gazza Suicide Watch

COKE-crazed ace Paul Gascoigne stunned hotel staff before being sent to a psychiatric unit by answering his door in the buff — with “MAD” scrawled on his forehead. The fallen soccer hero’s only companions while he remained holed up in his room on a two-month drugs and booze binge were battery-operated PARROTS. Ex-England ace Gazza, 40, would talk to one of them as if it were real, a source revealed. He also wandered around the hotel with them under his arm, getting them to squawk “f*** off” to fellow guests. An insider — who told how women staff were barred from Gazza’s room because he kept flashing at them — said: “He’s also been ordering plates of raw liver to his room." Last night Gazza was on suicide watch in a secure psychiatric unit after being sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Doctors ban bargain booze

A binge-drinking "epidemic" fuelled by longer licensing hours and cheap alcohol is gripping the country, senior doctors said yesterday. In an unprecedented report into the state of the nation's drinking habits, the British Medical Association says 24-hour licensing laws have led to rising alcohol consumption and spiralling health-related problems. Dr Vivienne Nathanson, the BMA's head of science and ethics, called on the Government to implement a range of policies including higher taxes, a clampdown on sales of cheap drink and a ban on supermarket promotions such as two-for-one deals.

The site was one of the internet success stories of 2007 and had signed up 8.9million users by December. But, after a year and a half of rising numbers, figures for January show that Facebook's following has declined by 400,000.

Welcome to the town that will make you lose weight

Towns and cities need to be radically redesigned to help to tackle the obesity epidemic, scientists were told —yesterday. Professor Philip James, chairman of the International Obesity Task Force, a London-based think-tank, called for a revolution in urban planning to encourage people to use cars less and public transport more.

— In England, 24.9 per cent of males and 25.2 per cent of women over 16 are obese
— 70 per cent of Tongan women aged 15-85 are obese. Tonga has the world’s fattest populations
— 30 per cent of British children are overweight.

“Our genes have not changed and yet childhood obesity is rising, and the major challenge is tackling the obesogenic environment that we all share. That includes looking at education, transport, town planning and so on, and not blaming parents for genetic susceptibilities that are not their fault.”

5 Dead in Gunman Horror

A CRAZED gunman dressed all in black killed five people and wounded 13 in a rampage at a US university yesterday.
Terrified students screamed as the youth burst from behind a curtain into a crowded lecture room, armed with THREE guns.
He pulled out a shotgun and two pistols and began firing wildly at the 140 students.
Finally, standing on a stage, the maniac — a student from another college — pointed a pistol at his head and blew his brains out.

Some of the injured were said to have suffered horrific head wounds. One was shot in the eye.
They had been having a geology lecture in Cole Hall at Northern Illinois University near Chicago. The maniac was described as a “skinny white guy”.
One weeping student said: “He was firing everywhere. Bullets were spraying round the room. It was horrific. He went crazy. It’s a wonder many people weren’t killed. He looked like a normal guy at first, wearing a black trench coat and a beanie hat.

Naked Cowboy sues Mars
A street performer known as the Naked Cowboy is suing snack firm Mars for millions of dollars for copying his trademark look on a billboard.
For about 10 years Robert Burck has been a fixture in New York's Times Square strumming a guitar on a street corner in his skimpy costume of white undies, cowboy boots and a hat.
But in a lawsuit filed this week in Manhattan federal court, Burck said that two oversized Times Square billboards that promote the chocolate snack M&Ms used his look without compensating him.
And he is now seeking $6.65 million from the chocolate company.
The billboards feature a scantily clad blue M&M with a guitar alongside views of New York including street scenes and the Statue of Liberty.
Burck is suing Mars, which makes M&Ms, and Chute Gerdeman Incorporated, an Ohio agency that he said created the advert, for trademark infringement.
Neither company was immediately available for comment.
"Just like The Naked Cowboy does on a daily basis in Times Square, the M&M is not only dressed as The Naked Cowboy, it is playing the Naked Cowboy's distinctive white guitar in the cartoon," the lawsuit said.

Thousands will die in British heatwaves

HEATWAVES caused by global warming will kill thousands of Britons in just FIVE YEARS time, Government experts warned last night.
It is the most confident official statement yet that climate change will hit Britain dramatically.
A Health Protection Agency report said illnesses like malaria and Lyme disease will claim lives as the UK heats up.
It warned that by 2012 there will be a one-in-40 chance the South East will suffer a serious heatwave causing 3,000 immediate heat-related deaths.
More deadly strains of mosquitoes in wetland areas could also cause malaria outbreaks. Lyme disease — carried by ticks — will become more common.
Skin cancer rates will soar due to increased sun exposure.
And the number of people at high risk of flooding will more than double to 3.5million by 2100. There will also be up to 14,000 more cases of food poisoning a year, including salmonella.
But the report wasn’t all gloom — it added that winter deaths caused by extreme cold will decline.
The agency’s Prof Robert Maynard said: “Climate change is likely to be one of the major challenges that humanity faces this century.
"It is important we assess the possible health impact and take any actions to minimise the consequences.
"The publication of this report is a significant step in that process."
The climate change topic has been hit by controversy in the UK.

First Day in Court for Heather and Paul
VAIN Heather Mills arrived at court for her divorce war with Sir Paul McCartney yesterday — flanked by a posse of sidekicks, including her personal trainer and MAKE-UP artist.
The ex-model, dubbed Mucca over her porn past, also brought her sister Fiona, a female pal, a minder, a chauffeur — and a lone solicitor to advise on legal protocol as she represents herself in court.
Heather, pleading her own case after she was dumped by her lawyers, aims to wring up to £100million out of former Beatle Macca, who is said to have an £825million fortune. As the hearing kicked off behind closed doors at London’s High Court, she showed the judge cosy home videos of herself and Sir Paul together in a bid to prove she was the star’s “rock” and deserved a huge cut of his money.
It is understood she also screened a video likening herself to Princess Diana — claiming she was hounded by paparazzi and needed 24-hour security to avoid the same fate.

The owner of Capital Radio, Classic FM and Xfm was an enthusiastic champion of digital audio broadcasting (DAB) under its previous management, spending an estimated £80m on new transmitters and stations.
But GCap's new chief executive, Fru Hazlitt, yesterday axed digital-only stations theJazz and Planet Rock as well as selling its majority stake in Digital One, the owner of the national DAB network.

Claiming the medium was "not economically viable", GCap will concentrate instead on its existing FM services and innovations in online listening such as technology allowing iPhone users to hear its stations. It hopes the moves will save £8.8m a year and help fend off a takeover approach from a rival group, Global Radio.

Owners of digital radios will still be able to receive a range of stations, including "simulcasts" of all the BBC and commercial networks they are used to hearing on the FM dial and a handful of digital-only stations such as BBC 6Music and Asian Network which are also available online and through digital TV.
But some analysts believe GCap's decision could lead other commercial operators to pull their investment in DAB, leaving the original promise of a whole range of new stations catering for all kinds of niche tastes unfulfilled.
The future of digital radio, once hailed as a bright new dawn vital to challenge the dominance of the BBC for commercial players, has split the industry. Some have called it the equivalent of Betamax but others point to soaring sales figures as evidence it remains the future of radio listening.

TheJazz, which had 364,000 listeners, and Planet Rock, one of the more popular digital services with 563,000, will cease broadcasting on March 31.

Too Nasty for Mr Nasty
A new ITV1 drama called Rock Star Rivals is causing a bit of a stir with its real life counterpart X factor. The show which lifts the lid on the dirty tricks occurring behind the scenes of a fictional reality pop talent show, focuses on the lives and relationships of the three judges.

Britney is Sectioned
STRICKEN BRITNEY SPEARS was rushed to a mental ward when she “went psychotic” and hurled obscenities after taking a cocktail of drugs over three sleepless nights.
The star, who suffers from bipolar disorder, is said to have flown into a “frightening manic phase” and threatened her mother and pals who begged her to get help.
The terrifying meltdown came after a crazed 60 hours, during which she:
SPENT days and nights driving aimlessly around city streets in her car;
FAILED to get any sleep - staying awake with a mix of prescription pills and 20 cans of Red Bull a day, and;
JABBERED constantly to herself in her bizarre British accent.
To see more pics from Britney's 60-hour meltdown click on the link below.

Britney, 26, was rushed to hospital “for her own safety” in the early hours of yesterday in an ambulance escorted by a vast police convoy.
She was last night being held in a psychiatric ward at the UCLA Medical Centre in Los Angeles.
Hospital sources said staff were forced to sedate the hysterical singer after she hurled abuse at medics and mum LYNNE, whom she accused of SLEEPING with her boyfriend.
Britney was effectively sectioned by doctors who ordered her into the psychiatric ward for a minimum 72 hours.
In the days before, the sleepless mum of two had used the Red Bulls to wash down amphetamine-based Adderall pills, anti-depressants, and ten stimulant laxatives a day.
A source close to her said: “Britney’s behaviour became really frightening. She flew into a manic phase. She hadn’t slept for more than 60 hours and had been staying awake with prescription pills and Red Bull.
“She was pale, shaking, and talking to herself in her strange British accent. We tried to give her sleeping pills to calm her down, but they didn’t work.
“Her psychologist came back to her house along with her mum, but Britney just screamed obscenities.
“She was psychotic. Her doctor and her family had been planning for weeks to get her into a psychiatric ward and they knew they couldn’t wait any longer, so called the police.

The Harley Street clinic is around the corner from Capio Nightingale hospital, where she is undergoing rehab.
A source close to the London Clinic said yesterday: “Amy was looking very pale and thin.
“She looked ropey and exhausted. Let’s hope she hasn’t taken a turn for the worse.”
Her dad Mitch has already told The Sun how she is suffering “horrific” withdrawal symptoms.
Yesterday he said: “Amy is OK. She is making progress but will be in rehab for a long time.”
Sun Doctor Carol Cooper said: “Going on a drip is a sign that things have got pretty bad.
“Crack is notoriously difficult to get off.”
