Atonement bags three Empire gongs

She saw off competition from other emerging talent including Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Atonement.
Control, which is shot entirely in black and white, also went away with the prize for best soundtrack.
The best director award was given to David Yates, the maker of the latest Harry Potter outing The Order of The Phoenix.
This Is England director Shane Meadows was honoured with the outstanding contribution to British film award.

Kids’ Oath To Serve the Queen

Schoolkids will be asked to swear an oath of loyalty to the Queen under new citizenship plans.

They will be expected to promise to obey the law in ceremonies like those for new immigrants. Former attorney-general Lord Goldsmith, heading a review of citizenship, wants kids to be more proud of Britain. A source close to the review, order by Gordon Brown, says it will help create a “shared sense of belonging.”

The oath of allegiance reflects a US tradition of pupils making a pledge while standing to attention before the flag with their right hand over their heart. The oath is not compulsory but it is common practice in many American schools.

Lord Goldsmith’s plan follows a study showing many children are made to feel ashamed of their roots by politically incorrect teachers.
