Glastonbury gigs seek new stars

The Glastonbury Festival is launching a regular gig night to give new bands the chance to earn a slot at the legendary music event.

New and unsigned acts are being sought for the Holy Cow night, with the best to be offered places at the festival.

"As a festival, we would really like to lead the way in new music," said Emily Eavis, daughter of festival founder Michael Eavis.

Envy Corps and Vampire Weekend play the first gig at The Social club in London. Ms Eavis is now looking for new talent to play at future Holy Cow gigs after the launch on Wednesday.

"We're really after unsigned acts and finding the best new acts from all corners of the country and beyond," she said.

The most impressive bands will be booked for one of the festival's smaller stages, with Ms Eavis hoping to uncover artists who will star on the main stage in the future.

California fires affect TV shows

Filming of TV shows including 24 has reportedly been hit by the wild fires sweeping across southern California.

Scenes featuring 24's lead star Kiefer Sutherland had to be halted at a military base near Irvine, Orange County, because of the smoke.

Other series were also hit, trade publication Hollywood Reporter said.

Fierce winds are fanning at least 16 fires that have razed land from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border, forcing 500,000 people out of their homes.

The blazes have left one person dead and destroyed at least 1,300 homes and businesses, officials say. They have led to the biggest US evacuation since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Mel C didn't want reunion
Melanie Chisholm has admitted that she never approved of a Spice Girls reunion, and that she only agreed to it after the other four girls threatened to go ahead without her.
Sporty Spice was the last one to agree to bring the girl group back because she was worried that the depression she suffered during the girls' heyday could return.
Mel C revealed to Closer magazine that it was a difficult decision for her, saying: "The girls approached me and said they were getting together to do a world tour, a greatest hits album and a big goodbye, and I was like: 'Oh no.' It was the last thing I wanted to hear.
